The Role of the Diaspora in Eliminating Female Genital Mutilation Across Somali Regions

On March 17th, 2023, during the NGOCSW67 Annual Forum, the Belt of Somali Women brought together a panel of renowned activists to discuss the critical role that the Somali diaspora plays in eliminating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in all Somali regions. The event featured leading voices from the Somali community, including Zahra Naleie, Asha Ismail, and Ifrah Ahmed, alongside Somali activists Ubah Ali and Shamsa Araweelo. Somali artist Najma Hashi also contributed, sharing how art can be a powerful tool for activism.

Moderated by journalist and activist Diaka Camara, the panel highlighted how diaspora-led initiatives are essential to breaking down cultural barriers and advocating for the end of female genital mutilation. The speakers shared personal stories, lessons learned, and practical solutions to mobilize communities both in Somalia and abroad.

Asha Ismail, co-founder of Save a Girl Save a Generation and a leading voice in the fight against female genital mutilation, urged all diaspora organizations to unite in their efforts. She emphasized that eliminating  female genital mutilation requires collective action, not only to protect the next generation but also to challenge the harmful norms that allow such practices to persist.

The Belt of Somali Women’s platform continues to push for change, working to unite Somali communities globally in the fight against female genital mutilation and all forms of gender-based violence. By harnessing the power of storytelling, art, and activism, the organization seeks to drive social transformation and create lasting change.

This event was a powerful reminder that, together, the diaspora has the strength and influence to make a difference in ending female genital mutilation and supporting women’s rights in Somali regions. The full recording of the panel is available on YouTube for those who wish to learn more.
