The Somali Human Rights Association (SOHRA) is a non-profit, non-governmental, and independent human rights and humanitarian organization founded on April 8, 2002, in Mogadishu, Somalia. The organization is committed to promoting and protecting the rights of the local community without any discrimination based on race, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, or any other reason.
The mission of SOHRA is to promote peaceful coexistence among all Persons of Concern (PoC) in South Central Somalia. The organization emphasizes the importance of humanitarian responses, monitoring and reporting on human rights violations and abuses, environmental protection advocacy, and establishing partnerships with development actors at the national and regional levels. Through advocacy campaigns, SOHRA aims to include areas hosting PoC in national development policies.
SOHRA’s primary activities are geared towards improving the basic economic and social conditions of local communities through service provision, protection, and emergency response activities. These activities include providing support to victims of girls and children’s abuses, violence against women (VAW), gender-based violence (GBV), and more. The organization also raises awareness through community mobilization and regularly introducing fundamental human rights principles to the public.
SOHRA also conducts investigations, documentation, monitoring, media interviews, and declarations calling for the protection of human rights and press releases condemning such violations. The organization has a network system of monitoring and collecting daily events in the area of coverage and all incidents of abuses that occur in the country.
