Women-Led. Community-Powered.
The Belt of Somali Women is a global network of grassroots, women-led organisations working to end FGM and gender-based violence, and to advance dignity, safety, and justice for Somali women and girls.
Our members are at the heart of everything we do. We exist to support, connect, and amplify their leadership.
Who Can Become a Member
Membership is open to organisations aligned with our mission and values.
- • Somali women-led grassroots organisations
- • Survivor-led and community-based initiatives
- • Diaspora groups working across Europe, Africa, and beyond
- • Emerging collectives aligned with our mission and values
We centre organisations that are rooted in communities and committed to women-led change.
Our Support Pillars
We support our members through four interconnected pillars designed to strengthen organisations, protect leaders, and grow collective impact.
1. Capacity Building & Organisational Strengthening
We help member organisations grow sustainably and lead with confidence.
Support includes:
- • Leadership development and governance support
- • Organisational systems and safeguarding guidance
- • Peer learning, mentoring, and skills-building workshops
- • Support navigating funding, compliance, and partnerships
Our approach is practical, trauma-informed, and grounded in lived experience.
2. Advocacy, Voice & Representation
We ensure Somali women's voices are heard where decisions are made.
Members gain access to:
- • Collective advocacy at national, regional, and international levels
- • Opportunities to shape policy, research, and public narratives
- • Representation in global forums, consultations, and campaigns
- • Support to safely amplify survivor and community voices
We advocate with members — never on their behalf without consent.
3. Network Support & Solidarity
Belonging matters. We connect members to each other across borders.
Network benefits include:
- • A trusted peer network of Somali women-led organisations
- • Safe spaces for collaboration, learning, and mutual support
- • Regional and international convenings (online and in-person)
- • Rapid solidarity and collective responses in moments of need
Together, we are stronger than any one organisation alone.
4. Resource Mobilisation & Partnerships
We work to unlock resources and opportunities for members.
This includes:
- • Connecting members to funders, donors, and strategic partners
- • Supporting collaborative funding and joint proposals
- • Strengthening visibility and credibility with institutional partners
- • Advocating for flexible, feminist, and community-led funding
Our goal is to ensure resources reach the communities doing the work.
Membership Is
- • Collaborative
- • Values-led
- • Survivor-centred
- • Rooted in trust and accountability
Membership Is Not
- • A service provider relationship
- • A one-size-fits-all model
- • A requirement to conform or compete
We respect the autonomy, knowledge, and leadership of every member.
