Our Identity
Who we are at our core
The Belt of Somali Women is a Somali-led collaborative initiative currently composed of 15 members operating across diverse regions globally. As a feminist and intersectional movement, we are dedicated to eradicating female genital mutilation (FGM) and other forms of violence against Somali women.
We strive for a society where Somali women live free from violence, discrimination, and inequality, asserting their right to thrive and contribute to society as equal.

Our Vision
We envision a world where Somali women are free from the practice of female genital mutilation and all forms of violence. Our goal is to unite communities, survivors, civil society organizations, activists, and experts to work together toward gender equality.
Our Mission
Our mission is to mobilize the Somali community—both in the countries of origin and the diaspora—to advocate for social change and the elimination of female genital mutilation, early and forced marriages, and sexual violence. By addressing these issues, we aim to empower Somali women and girls, giving them the opportunity to live with dignity and equality.

Our Focus
Where our work and passion meet
Female genital mutilation remains an urgent issue in many Somali communities worldwide. Despite ongoing efforts to eliminate the practice, it continues to affect a significant number of women and girls, resulting in long-lasting physical, psychological, and emotional harm. At Belt of Somali Women, we recognize the critical need to address this practice, and we are dedicated to working with communities and survivors to advocate for its elimination.
